Dancers at the 2006 Fort Robinson Intertribal Gathering.According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 2005, the rate of illicit drug use among American Indian and Alaskan Native youth, ages 12 to 17, is twice the rate of the general population.

Running Strong promotes healthy lifestyles for Native American youth by supporting cultural activities that teach youth respect, resiliency, and decision-making skills based on cultural beliefs.
