Girls show the corn they have grown in the Center Pole's garden. Project: Wellknown Buffalo's Children's Garden Organization: The Center Pole Year: 2002-Present Tribe: Crow Reservation: Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations Location: Garryowen, MT
The Center Pole garden, also known as Wellknown Buffalo's Children's Garden is an intergenerational project based on Crow and Hidatsa history.
The Children's garden involves youth and elders from the Reservation. With all ages working together, children learn cultural lessons, good nutrition, math, and gardening. Most importantly, they see firsthand what can be achieved through cooperation and hard work.
Each year the Children's Garden grows: • traditional Crow corn • three other varieties of corn • three types of beans • three types of squash • tomatoes • peppers
Each year, more than 65 children and elders participate in the year-round activities in the garden. In the warm months children grow and harvest fresh produce, and in the winter learn traditional methods of preserving both the vegetables and other food such as buffalo meat.
Running Strong provides general support for the garden.
