The Chadron Native American Center (CNAC) is active in the Nebraska counties of Dawes, Sheridan, Box Butte, and Scottsbluff where there is a large American Indian population. Often leaving the reservation in search of work or other opportunity, these families are left few resources to help them make the transition.
CNAC creates a safe place to go where Indian families from 4 counties can find help.
Programs the center runs include: • recreational activities for youth including basketball, dance, karate, and swimming • youth and adult drum groups and dance clubs • organizing “Native American Parent Teams” to address high drop out rates and alcohol abuse in the four counties • Lakota language classes • emergency medical assistance and AA classes • tutoring and mentoring activities • a food bank for families when food runs out • an annual wacipi (powwow) celebration for the community.
Running Strong writes annual grants to the Chadron Native American Center for general support.
