Emil Her Many Horses

(Oglala Lakota), Treasurer

emilEmil Her Many Horses is recognized as an accomplished artist in contemporary beadwork and contemporary dolls, who specializes in Northern and Southern Plains culture. 

In 2001, his talent won him the Best of Show category for his tribute to the Lakota Sioux Vietnam Veterans at the Northern Plains Tribal Arts Show.

Emil was born and raised on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. 

After working at the Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum on the Rosebud Reservation, Emil received a prestigious internship with the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC. 

Today, Emil is an Associate Curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington, DC. 

Emil recently curated the acclaimed exhibit Identity by Design, which featured historic and contemporary native womens’ dresses from the Plains, Plateau and Great Basin regions.
