Council member Beatrice Weasel Bear (Oglala Lakota) and her daughter Loretta Afraid of Bear (Oglala Lakota). Project Name: International Council of the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers Organization: Center for Sacred Studies Year: 2006-Present Tribe: Worldwide Location: Sonora, CA
In original tribal cultures, the Grandmothers' Council was a meeting of revered female elders. The Council was honored as the final authority on most tribal matters, including the waging of war.
In 2004, female elders from four continents, representing more than ten tribes, joined together to form the International Council of the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers.
The Grandmothers seek to increase knowledge of indigenous culture, traditional medicine, a connection with Mother Earth, and peaceful solutions to the world’s problems.
The Council enjoys support from the Center for Sacred Studies, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is dedicated to sustaining indigenous ways of life.
Presently, the International Council of the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers meets twice a year in locations around the world.
The Council held their Fifth Council Gathering in the Black Hills of South Dakota to honor Council members Beatrice and Rita Long Visitor Holy Dance (Oglala Lakota).
Running Strong for American Indian Youth® supports the work and mission of the Council.
