Project: Summer Camp Organization: Indian Youth of America Year: 1999-Present Tribe: Indian youth of all affiliations Location: Sioux City, IA
Indian Youth of America’s (IYA) mission is to improve the quality of life for Indian children by providing educational and cultural opportunities for them that foster a positive sense of self and heritage.
Each year, IYA holds summer camps for Indian children, ages 10-14, from 180 tribes and over 28 states, in Arizona and South Dakota.
IYA summer camps offer activities such as: • Learning from special guests who come to teach the children about Native songs, dances, stories, and cultural traditions • Volleyball, mushball, and basketball tournaments • Canoeing, swimming, hiking, and archery • Field trips to sites such as Crazy Horse • Arts and crafts, puppetry, and campfire skits.
Running Strong provided general support to IYA Summer Camps.
