In 2004, the University of Montana released a special report that said Native Americans in the state, between the ages of 15 and 17, are almost four times more likely to have children than their white counterparts.
In Montana, American Indian families face the ever-present challenge of geographic isolation. On the Crow Reservation, most of the tribe's approximately 10,000 members live at least an hour away from an urban center.
Overcrowding and insufficient housing are serious problems on the Reservation, as are poor nutrition, poverty, and high unemployment rates.
Running Strong supports a wide variety of programs in Montana, from youth initiatives helping to educate and create a safe environment for American Indian children, to spiritual runs and utilities assistance.
