Sobriety and Strength through the Brave Heart Society
Maralena was addicted to methamphetamines and alcohol when she came to the annual Nagi Kicopi Healing Retreat in 2001. The first few retreats were frustrating for her as she struggled with maintaining sobriety, but her time at the Brave Heart lodge gave her the support system she needed to achieve a sober life. She said that these retreats showed her a life that she did not know existed and helped her rediscover her own identity. She sought counseling and treatment to put the trauma of substance abuse behind her. She is now an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor for others who wish to seek sobriety
