VISTA Volunteer for Community Technology Project
RECRUITING FOR SPRING 2008

Organization:
Christian Relief Services Charities (CRSC)

Title: Community Technology VISTA Project Job

Description: When Billy Mills, an Oglala Lakota, an Olympic champion and humanitarian, joined CRSC as our spokesperson in 1986, we found our voice and mission to assist American Indian families with water, food, housing, heat, youth programs, culture and language preservation.

CRSC maintains a field office in Eagle Butte, South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. In 2006, with its affiliate the Cheyenne River Youth Project®, CRSC constructed a teen center for teenagers living on Cheyenne River. A CTC VISTA volunteer will play a vital role in our movement to build the capacity of the teen center’s internet café and offer affordable internet access on Cheyenne River. We envision the VISTA developing and implementing a business plan for the café; providing the IT expertise to ensure that it runs efficiently and securely; and training staff and volunteers to make certain that the café will be serving the community for years to come.

Specific activities the VISTA member will perform include:
• Develop and implement a business plan for the operation of the café
• Develop and implement a security plan for access to computer hardware, including ID cards and passwords for users
• Install and maintain security and monitoring software for Internet access
• Develop a teen center website, which will promote community news, events, and activities
• Reach out to the community by teaching classes on using the Internet and/or other IT-related topics
• Recruit and train local volunteers to work in the café
• Fundraise for enhancements to the café if necessary (basic start-up and operation costs are already budgeted for)

Recommended skills and qualifications:
•  Intermediate pc skills
• Troubleshooting and repair skills
• Interpersonal skills
• Proficiency in English
• Business administration skills
